The House Approves Bill Banning Abortion After 20 Weeks, Will the Senate Support This Bill?

The House of Representatives approved a bill on Tuesday October 3rd that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Fox News reports “The measure, if enacted into law, would allow the procedure after 20 weeks in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother and would not penalize women. However, it would criminalize abortions after 20 weeks and punish abortion providers with a maximum five-year jail sentence.”

The bill still needs to pass the senate which would require 60 senate votes, a majority of the Senate currently is Republican and most of them will likely support this bill. Currently there are 52 Republicans, 46 Democrats, and 2 Independents in the Senate. Although the Republicans have the majority of the Senate it may be hard for them to pull together the 60 votes needed to pass this bill.

People for the 20 week abortion ban argue that by 20 weeks the child can feel pain and that after 20 weeks abortion is essentially murder. The website: Doctorsonfetalpain.com shows scientific evidence that by 20 weeks of development the unborn child can feel pain.

While those who are against the ban argue that this is a plan to eventually ban abortion entirely, and that the scientific evidence suggesting that the unborn child can feel pain after 20 weeks is false. Planned Parenthood tweeted this today:
